Among the factors that medical schools and other health professions programs consider when evaluating applicants is practical experience gained through internships or volunteer activities. At UCR, there are many opportunities for you to become involved in such activities.
The UCR Career Center’s Academic Internship Program assists students in finding employers or organizations that wish to provide experiential learning opportunities to students. A variety of internships at local hospitals and clinics are available through the database of the Career Services Center and the services of the Science Internship Coordinator. The Career Centar also provides links to a variety of Resources for Pre-Health Professions Students.
Patient care experience can also be gained through the Critical Care Extender Program, a one-year internship with rotations in Emergency Medicine, Maternal and Child Health Care, and Surgery.
Recently, a group of UCR medical students volunteering with a meal program for the homeless established a student-operated clinic in downtown Riverside to offer basic medical and dental screening.
Additional volunteer opportunities are coordinated through the Campus and Community Service Program, which promotes student volunteerism and sponsors many service projects in which students can become involved.
Experience can also be gained by doing research under the mentorship of a UCR faculty member. The Office of Undergraduate Research helps students find undergraduate research positions with faculty mentors.
